Welfare and Community Officer

Why did you get involved with the SU?

I first became involved in the SU during my first year as a student when I co-founded a new society. I became more involved in the Students' Union by managing a society.

If you could achieve one thing in your year as an Officer, what would it be?

I am here to make change and the one thing I want to achieve is to give students more say in the work their Students' Union does. I want to empower students and improve representation, increasing student engagement with the Students' Union.

Who’s your icon?

My icon is Martin Luther King Jr. He is my mentor. I draw inspiration from his fight for the Black Civil Rights Movements in America in the 60s. Black oppression is still present today and the UK cannot hide from it anymore. Our SU needs more equal representation, and some of the new Officers are the first BAME Officers in their roles. MLK shall be my inspiration to combat inequality in our Student’s Union.

What’s your best memory of being a student at UoM?

During an event with the African Caribbean Society, we discussed toxic masculinity and, as someone with personal experience of this subject matter, I was able to give strong answers.

What do you love most about Manchester?

I love the Manchester spirit. One of the reasons I chose to study at Manchester was its diverse community and the city’s history. Manchester led the world’s industrial revolution, Manchester led the UK for LGBTQ+ campaigns, Manchester led in the computing systems and Manchester is the home of graphene. Manchester is a leading city and has an amazing student life. As a leader you need such inspiration and motivation from the place you live. Manchester motivates me, with its history and diversity, to become a better leader.

What’s your proudest moment?

For now, the election results night has been my happiest moment at UoM. I was happy to be elected in my role and to be able to make the changes I promised the students during my campaign.
