Accessibility

Our commitment

The University of Manchester Students' Union is committed to having a fully accessible building so everyone can use our facilities and participate in our events, meetings, gigs and parties.

The Advice Service has relocated to the first floor of the Students’ Union with an accessible entrance and passenger lift

We're constantly improving the accessibility in our building and we were the first Students' Union in the country to be awarded the ‘Access Challenge: Most Improved’ by NUS. The Access Challenge, established to improve access in Students’ Unions, is a partnership between the NUS, national charity Attitude is Everything, Disabled Go and the Changing Places Campaign.

We have also been busy working with Attitude is Everything, a national charity dedicated to improving Deaf and disabled people's access to music venues. We're proud to announce that we have recently been awarded Silver status, and we're working towards Gold.

If you're visiting the Students' Union or one of the Academy Venues, please to let us know of any access requirements you may have.

Accessibilty in the building

The following facilities are in place at our building on Oxford Road to ensure we are as accessible as possible:

  • A hearing induction loop
  • A disabled ramp to our entrance
  • Accessible toilets
  • A passenger lift to every floor

If you have any access requirements that you'd like to discuss with us, please email or telephone 0161 275 2930

Working with attitude is everything

Attitude is Everything improves Deaf and disabled people's access to live music by working in partnership with audiences, artists and the music industry to implement a Charter of Best Practice across the UK.

We are signed up to the charter and are delighted to announce that we were awarded Silver in February 2013. We're the first Students' Union in the country to achieve Silver and we're now working hard to achieve Gold status.

We started working Attitude is everything in 2011, to improving deaf and disabled people’s access to music venues.

Signing up to Attitude is Everything’s charter of best practice meant venues such as The Academy 1,2,3, Club Academy and the Union Bar were mystery shopped by deaf and disabled gig goers to help venues make improvements in line with the customers feedback. Our venue underwent rigours investigation including an access survey and was required to make an action plan which demonstrates a venues long term commitment towards accessibility.
