There are few places on campus as iconic as the Academy, and even as a part of such an old, iconic university, its history is seriously impressive. Dating back to 1963 and hosting big names such as Pink Floyd and Stevie Wonder, Manchester Academy has been a staple of Manchester life for the music-conscious student for decades now and has remained relevant throughout Manchester’s rich musical history.

A city with the musical prestige of Manchester needs equally prestigious venues to thrive and over the years Manchester Academy has offered that in abundance. Acts from Manchester, across the UK and all over the world have sold out shows at the Academy, uniting students and locals alike in its vast, open hall. Manchester natives such as the Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses and Oasis have all appeared multiple times on the Academy stage, alongside international superstars like Amy Winehouse, Kylie Minogue and Wu-Tang Clan.

Manchester Academy has been home to a diverse range of music over its long history, attracting audiences and acts from all over the UK to one of the world’s most culturally renowned cities. Fans of pop, rap indie or any kind of genre can find a night for them with over 80 acts playing Academy 1 in the 18/19 academic year alone.

Hundreds of smaller acts from across the globe have performed in the Academy 2 and Academy 3 venues, offering those acts with less of a reputation but still a cult following a chance to sell out intimate venues and giving students the chance to unearth a hidden gem or support an artist on their rise to the top.

All Academy venues offer affordable, high-quality performances from as big a range of artists as even the most avid music listeners could ask for, and even the occasional non musical event if Bongo’s Bingo is more your fancy!
