Kwame Asamoah Kwarteng
General Secretary

Kwame returns for a second year as General Secretary of the Students’ Union. He aims to encourage integration and inclusion, influence university-wide decisions with students’ voices, and enhance students’ educational experience. He wants to increase students’ employability by helping them to gain practical work experience before graduation. His icon is Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister of Ghana who championed the fight for Africa's liberation from British colonisation. The thing Kwame loves most about Manchester is the energy in the city and its people.

Chenze Ma
Women’s Officer

Chenze joins the Students’ Union with a mission to improve support services for students and enhance their University experience. As Women’s Officer, she wants to redefine Feminism and her icon is Kimberlé Crenshaw, who delivers TED talks on gender and race issues. She is inspired by Manchester as a city of change - the birthplace of Workers Unions and the Suffragette Movement, which campaigned for women’s right to the vote. Her proudest moment was volunteering with a charity organisation to improve education prospects for people living in remote villages.

Nana Fredua Agyeman
Postgraduate Officer

Nana has always been interested in student leadership. Having been a course representative, he has a good insight into the challenges facing students at University. As Postgraduate Officer, he hopes to work on policies that will ensure every postgraduate student can feel confident about entering the world of work after their studies: he believes that good grades are not the only thing you need to be successful after University! Nana is a big football fan and his favorite thing about living in Manchester is being so close to the Old Trafford and Etihad stadiums.

Laetitia Alexandratos
Education Officer

Laetitia is passionate about giving our students an educational experience which is up-to-date with the challenges of our time, having previously been a student rep. She hopes to retrofit the curriculum to reflect the environmental and social challenges imposed by the climate crisis in a decolonised, intersectional and democratic manner and ensure an effective transition to blended learning. Outside of student politics, she is a musician and a big fan of the Manchester music scene - her best memory from University was going to see The Internet play in Manchester Academy 1.

Carol Chepkech Tiriongo
Activities & Development Officer

Carol joins the Students’ Union with the aim of helping all students to have a diverse, inclusive and memorable experience in Manchester. Her best memory of being a student at UoM was building friendships with people from all over the world and, as Activities and Development Officer, she hopes to create platforms for students to share their cultures. Carol has a passion for the environment and her icon is Wangari Maathai: a Kenyan social and environmental activist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Carol loves living in Manchester because of the city’s vibrance and it’s infrastructure, which makes it a great place for photography!

Junior Usina
Welfare & Community Officer

Junior is passionate about making change and empowering students; as Welfare and Community Officer, he wants to ensure that student voices are always reflected in the work we do as a Students’ Union. He takes his inspiration from Martin Luther King Jr and his fight for Black Civil Rights in America in the 60s, and hopes to improve BAME representation within the Students’ Union. He is passionate about ‘the Manchester spirit’ - the city’s diverse community and it’s pioneering history - and believes that this spirit will motivate him to be the best student leader he can be.

Yueru Du
Liberation and Access Officer

As your Liberation and Access Officer, Yueru hopes to improve diversity and representation within the Students’ Union and the wider University community. She wants to elevate the voices of those who have historically been silenced and equip students with the skills and resources to tackle institutional racism. She is inspired by the amazing history of Manchester, as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

Ecem Yalcin
International Officer

Ecem is passionate about ensuring our International students have the best possible experience at University. Having come to Manchester as an international student herself, she understands how overwhelming living abroad can be and wants to ensure our International students feel supported and connected. She has been president of a cultural society and now hopes to create more opportunities for students to share their cultures. She loves Manchester because of its amazing energy, despite the weather!
