Making our planet sustainable is a goal that our students are passionate about. However to ensure that as a students’ union we move from just providing our students the platform to just talk about sustainability to taking actual action, your 2020/21 SU Officers have secured a £50,000 grant from the university to establish the UMSU Steve Biko Sustainability Fund. As part of the SU’s values, sustainability is something we hold dear to our hearts and the students union has been participating in the NUS Green Impact awards for years. So this fund is to help us embed the same values in our students and support them in their bid to create more impact and a more sustainable world. This fund will be open to all students who would like to undertake any sustainability /ethics- related projects but are financially constrained to do so.
The Steve Biko Sustainability fund will provide up to a maximum of £500 to an individual or a team of students whose project proposal is selected. The allocation of the funds will be dependent on the scope of the project and whether or not we still have funds available.
Application is open to individuals and teams. However, we would encourage team application.
Applicants or the team applying must be current students of the University of Manchester regardless of their degree status (i.e. Undergraduate, Postgraduate taught or Research) or tuition fee status (home or International students).
The applicant or team applying for the fund must submit a maximum of a three page project proposal with an outline as below (any proposal that exceeds three pages will be automatically rejected)
The application window will open from 15/06/2021 to 06/07/2021. All the submitted project proposals will be reviewed and shortlisted. . Shortlisted projects will be invited for an interview and the successful applicants will be notified within a maximum of two weeks. The SU finance department will then get in touch with successful applicants for the money transfer purposes. Unsuccessful applications will be notified as well.
Successful applicants agree to use the funds received for the purpose outlined in the research proposal that was submitted and approved. Applicants whose application receives funding from this fund agrees to submit evidence of project outputs and or benefit after project completion, to the students union via activitiesofficer.su@manchester.ac.uk. Successful applicants agree for their projects and the projects outputs to be published on The University of Manchester Students’ union website and or The University of Manchester’s Website. Successful applicants agree for the Students’ Union and The University of Manchester to use their projects and its outputs in its marketing and promotional materials.
Applicants declare that the project proposal submitted is based on their original idea and that they are solely responsible for any intellectual property violations that may arise as a result of not seeking permission from intellectual property holders whose ideas were used in this project.
