WHO WE ARE…

SAFER, which stands for Students for a Fair and Educated Response is a student led campaign, born out of the Covid crisis, which campaigns for academic, physical and financial safety for all students.

We feel that the University's poor handling of the pandemic has threatened student safety and harmed our academic experience.

We demand that the university acknowledges their mistakes, apologises and responds accordingly.

We will not stop campaigning until the voices of students have been heard.

WHAT WE DO…

SAFER has three main demands of the University.

1) That a partial reimbursement of tuition fees is provided to current students at UoM. This reimbursement should be made without making cuts to staff or staff salaries. Students should pay £6,192 which is the same fee that The Open University charges for an online honors degree.

2) That a new staff support plan is created. This should specify:

  • That the act of employing academic staff on fixed term contracts is abolished
  • Reduced workload for academic staff.
  • No forced return to face to face teaching.

3) That a crisis plan is created should another situation similar to that of the 2020 Covid19 pandemic arise again.

We are currently holding weekly protests to ask the University to listen to these demands. Details of these can be found on our Instagram and Facebook pages. All of our protests are as safe as possible, and we ask all our protesters to wear masks and adhere to social distancing wherever possible.

Click here to check out our report which provides evidence to support our demands.
