We are a small, university-based branch of People & Planet striving to make change at the University of Manchester for the better of the environment.

 

WHAT WE DO…

People and Planet at UoM run campaigns which call for the university to better improve its relations to people - and the planet!

Our Fossil Free campaign lasted 8 years, and finally celebrated success this year.The campaign called for UoM to declare its commitment to divest from fossil fuels, and join 81 universities around the UK that have already done so. The campaign took many different forms over the years, such as petitions and thought-provoking large scale art installations; there are so many ways to get involved!

In February 2019, with UoM failing to commit to any targets or even meet with representatives, People and Planet stopped a Board of Governors meeting to attempt to engage with senior management. This was followed in subsequent months with a 24hr occupation of university property in which occupiers were denied access to food, water, and toilets. Having still seen no movement from UoM, People and Planet escalated further with a 7 day occupation in November 2019, where again UoM attempted to deny access to food, water, electricity and toilets. Despite this, occupiers left with a signed deal, mediated with help from SU representatives, that UoM would review not just its investments in fossil fuels but would look to completely decarbonise its investment portfolio.

Since then, People and Planet has kept a close eye on the University's implementation of their side of the deal, critiquing the new investment policy. Following this success we are are so excited to move onto our next campaign!
