Islamophobia Towards LGBTQ Muslims Workshop:

LGBT+ spaces both within and outside of University should be safe for all self-identifying LGBT+ people, but all too often, this is sadly not the case. In this workshop, we will explore the reasons for and the forms that Islamophobic discrimination within queer spaces can take. The event is open to LGBT+ Muslims and allies, so that we can all come together to educate ourselves, devise solutions, and move forward.

Muslims on Screen: A Bias Portrayal:

Have you ever noticed a pattern in the role of Muslim Characters in popular TV and Film? Do you feel that Muslims on screen tend to fit into the ‘Muslim Stereotype’? We’ll be talking about the heavy bias in the presentation of Muslims in entertainment and the impact this has. Learn more about ‘The Riz Test’ and what it means by attending this event.

Let’s Talk About Prevent:

Contribute to discussions relating to manifestations of intolerance and discrimination against Muslims in Higher Education. From PREVENT to being visibly Muslim and its implications in Universities, find out what we can do to begin challenging and dismantling Islamophobia. There will be presentations from the following speakers on the work and research they’ve carried out surrounding prevent. 

Dr Necla Acik: Lecturer at the University of Manchester who wrote the ''Safeguarding, Surveillance and Control: School Policy and Practice Responses to the Prevent Duty and the ‘war on terror’ in the U.K’’ chapter. 

Dr Hilary Pilkington: currently a Commissioner on the Preventing Violent Extremism and Promoting Social Cohesion Commission which seeks to develop a Greater Manchester approach to preventing hateful extremism and strengthening social cohesion.

Samiya Butt: Manchester Prevent Coordinator at Manchester city council

Adnan Rahman: anti-prevent activist at the University of Leicester

Learn about how it can take a toll on victims and how you can challenge negative thoughts linked with Islamophobia at this interactive talk.
