Black History Month

The 1st October marks the launch of Black History Month.

This year, Sara, the Access and Liberation Officer, the African and Carribean Society and Elete and Amaal the BME Officers, have a full list of events for you!

 

History-Caribbean: The Haitian Revolution (Black History Month):

4th October, 6:30-8:30pm, room 1.4

 

Understanding the Black Attainment Gap (Black History Month):

What does it mean that Black students at University are less likely to receive First class degrees? Why is this happening and how do we level the playing field? 
At this panel and Q&A, activists from other Universities will be discussing why the Black attainment gap exists, and what we can do to close it.
8th October, 6-8pm

 

BME Conversation Corner (Black History Month):

Meet new people with a shared identity and talk about shared experiences and issues.

11th October, 7-9pm

 

Cultural Evening (Black History Month):

Celebrate being BME with an evening of food, visual art, performances and more! Come dressed in traditional clothing from your cultural background.

Queer Black Narratives (Black History Month):

For as long as Black people have been shut out of history, Black LGBT+ people have been virtually invisible. Today, representation of the LGBT+ community is still overwhelmingly white, when history shows that in reality, homophobic and transphobic attitudes were often forced upon communities by the European coloniser. 
Come and listen to Black British archivist Ajamu X as he takes us through the too-often neglected history of Black gay men in Britain, and discusses the importance of archiving queer Black narratives.

University of Manchester Students' Union's FIRST EVER club night celebrating Black History Month! 
BLACKOUT is open to all BME students and friends to enjoy a night of RnB and Afrobeats, with all proceeds going back to fund the essential work the Students' Union does to advocate for Black students.

Being Black and Muslim (Black History Month):

In an era of rising Islamophobia, racism, and xenophobia, the unique experience of being Black and Muslim often means discrimination from within the Muslim community as well as beyond. Come along to this panel, where we will discuss various relevant issues, such as how anti-Blackness takes shape in the Muslim community and how we can fight it.
