On Campus Cycling Training for Staff and Students

Free instructor led sessions to build confidence in those learning to ride or those who feel under confident cycling on roads.

A number of free sessions are scheduled over the Autumn taking place at uni place and outside Ellen Wilkinson Building to support staff and students to consider more active travel and get on your bike! Led by instructors from Transport for Greater Manchester, there are limited spaces on these courses so please register or send an expression of interest to es@manchester.ac.uk book.

Road Rider Ready - Max 14 spaces per session

If you’re a confident off-road cyclist but hesitant about cycling on the road, this course if for you. This course is designed to meet the needs of those looking to take the next step. Held in a traffic free environment, our instructors will look to develop the skills necessary for you to cycle confidently, share space and integrate safely with other road users.

Road Rider Ready can help with:

  • Preparing yourself and your bike for cycling on the road
  • Effective starting positions
  • Starting off, pedalling and stopping with control and consideration
  • Controlling the bike, use gears and manoeuvre safely around objects
  • Communicating with others
  • Looking all around and behind, and control the bike with one hand
  • Share space with pedestrians and other cyclists

Learn to Ride – Max 14 spaces per session

If it’s been a while since you’ve ridden a bike, or maybe you’ve never had the chance to try, Learn to Ride is the course for you. Learn to Ride courses are led by qualified instructors who look to teach the basics of the bike.

Over the duration of the course, you will learn:

  • Getting on/off safely
  • Starting and stopping
  • Balance
  • Control
  • Steering the bike and stopping quickly if you need to
  • Things they should check before each ride

Tues 22nd Oct 2-4pm and 5-7pm – Learn to Ride

If you don’t yet own a bike, there are a number of bike sales taking place near main campus throughout September and October run by cycling charity NCA, and if you currently ride to work but haven’t registered your bike there are a number of free bike marking drop ins across campus run by the Crime Reduction team (also making you eligible for a discounted D lock at only £15).
