Nicholas Matthews - Student Trustee

I am a third year PhD student in Science Technology and Innovation Policy at the University of Manchester. My research sees me working across several departments looking at how emerging technologies can be governed more sustainably.

Away from my desk I like to read, visit pubs and keep active. I can often be found hiking in the peak district or running along Manchester’s many canals. During the last year I have also been Treasurer of The University of Manchester Squash club and I have been the PhD representative for my research institute.

Having a well-functioning students union is an essential part of supporting a vibrant, happy and inclusive environment for students on campus. As a trustee I hope to utilise my previous experience of various student union roles during my undergraduate study to provide informed oversight of the union’s operation and thereby help to ensure its ongoing good governance. In particular, I am keen to focus on maintaining and improving the financial sustainability of the union. Drawing on knowledge and skills from my research, I would also like to support the union in understanding and improving its social and environmental sustainability.
