Women's Officer

Why did you get involved with the SU?

I first got involved with the SU because it offered a wide range of activities that I could join to meet new friends. After that, I got elected as a part-time International Students Officer. This motivated me to continue as a student leader and fuelled my mission to improve the support service available to students and enhance their university experience.

If you could achieve one thing in your year as an Officer, what would it be?

I would like to redefine “feminism” and show people that feminism is not about hating men but about challenging the gender stereotypes and discriminatory attitudes that still takes place in society. I want to encourage men to be supportive allies of the feminist movement, and make this position more representative.

Who’s your icon?

Kimberlé Crenshaw. Her TED talks about the issues pertaining to gender and race really impress me. Her passion and research inspire me not to be silent anymore.

What’s your best memory of being a student at UoM?

All those amazing, interesting people I met at UoM, the wisdom they instilled in me and the guidance they gave.

What do you love most about Manchester?

I like the approach that the people of Manchester take to solving problems; for example, it's the city where Unions were created to fight for the rights of workers. It is also the birthplace of the suffragettes, who campaigned for women’s right to the vote. I believe the people of Manchester still stand for change and hope today.

What’s your proudest moment?

When I was a first year, I joined a charity organization. The members were volunteering to teach students who lived in remote villages. I organised a fundraising event to raise money for them and worked to publicise the event. The funds raised from the event were able to cover everyone’s living expenses successfully.
