Your Ideas, Our Policy

Shape what we do, what we debate and what we campaign on.

Our policies are created and decided by students, covering a wide range of areas such as sustainability, equal rights, education and much more. Once an idea passes at Senate, it becomes policy for three years.

After a policy comes to the end of its three year cycle, the Steering Committee are required to review the policies and recommend to the Senate that they should be either renewed without amendment for up to three years, amended or allowed to lapse. This means that the policies are no longer active.

Check out the complete list of active policies below!

Amend a policy

Are you a Senate member? Have you received a first draft of the latest Senate agenda?

If you would like to change the wording of a policy proposal, you can do so by submitting an amendment. Your amendment can add, remove or replace specified lines of the proposal. Your amendment will then be circulated to other Senate members to give them the opportunity to comment on and submit alternative proposals. Your amendment will be voted on separately to the policy proposal at Senate. It will be voted on first, and if it passes, the policy will be voted on as amended (including your amendment).

Are you a student? Would you like to change one of the policies listed here?

Great! You can submit a proposal via the Ideas Submission Platform. Make sure you clearly state which policy you would like to amend, how and why. Your submission will then be considered by Steering Committee, who will work with you to bring it to Senate.

Questions? Email the SU's Democratic Engagement Coordinator at stefanie.cooper@manchester.ac.uk who will help you out.

Got an idea?

Submit it for discussion at Senate, the SU's highest decision-making body!

You can put forward any idea you have to make student life better, including:

- Ways the SU could improve your University or SU experience, no matter how big or small

- Issues, campaigns or stances you believe the Union should champion
