From the 20th of February until the 13th of March there will be another wave of Industrial Action. As your elected officers we want to make our stance on the upcoming industrial action clear, and most importantly, inform you of what you can do during the industrial action. We support striking staff’s right to fight for a better working environment; many of these individuals are graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and PhD students, who we directly represent as a Students’ Union. Fundamentally we believe well rewarded and motivated staff are key to an outstanding student experience, and without this, we would not be able to achieve what we do as a University here at Manchester.

As a Students’ Union, we have a duty to support students, and a democratic mandate through our Senate to stand in solidarity with staff, and to communicate with you throughout the strikes. But we want to do more than just that this time around; we will be sending out communication on what you can do during the strikes, from making formal complaints to the University to making up for lost teaching, to supporting striking staff, and more. In the midst of this, we will be working with the University to minimise the impact for you, ensuring mitigation is applied where needed and pushing to ensure you are not held from progressing or graduating.

We have had a lot of concerns from students and whilst we push out information on what you can do, you can speak to us in the Students’ Union or you can contact our advice service in person or via email advice.su@manchester.ac.uk. Due To the current demand, our advice service may take longer to respond than usual.

If we do not take action soon, then working in higher education will become unsustainable for staff, and students will miss out on great academic staff who truly shape the academic experience we have here at Manchester.

The University never tells us what our rights are, and it’s time we take action and fight for a better working environment for a better education.
