Attending a protest this weekend?

If you do decide to attend a Black Lives Matter protest this weekend, here’s a few tips. If you feel like you can’t and want to take action, check out our latest post on things you can do to help from home.

What to wear

•         A facemask: It’s still very important to protect yourself and others from coronavirus whilst protesting. Click here for a guide on how to make your own.

•         Nondescript/black clothing: This will help you blend in to the protest and also help protect your identity.

•         Good walking shoes: Anything you can’t walk easily in or leaves your feet exposed such as sandals and flip-flops are a bad idea.

What to do

·         Maintain social distancing: Try whenever you can to stay two feet away from your fellow protestors.

·         Do your research: You should not be protesting if you don’t know why you are protesting, and it’s not fair to expect others to educate you. Click here for an anti-racist reading list and here to find more about the Black Lives Matter movement.

·         Be a good ally: If you are a white person attending a Black Lives Matter protest, make sure you are listening to, and amplifying the voices of black protestors, not speaking over them. Click here to read more on how you can be a good ally.

What to bring

·         Protest signs: You can make protest signs out of old boxes, mounting boards and paint. Make your sign bold and easy to read from far away. You might want to make a few signs to hand out to other protestors.

·         Hand Sanitizer: Whether you’re exchanging signs, or lending a helping hand to a fellow protestor, having hand sanitiser nearby is a good idea.

·         Water: Bring water to stay hydrated and avoid asking others to share theirs.

·         Snacks: Bring snacks to keep your energy up or to hand out to others.
